Philip J. (“PJ”) Pence is a partner at Thomas Mamer and an experienced employment law and complex litigation attorney. His practice focuses on employment law disputes and counseling, complex commercial litigation, and representation of small businesses and nonprofit organizations.
Mr. Pence represents clients in a wide range of federal and state employment law matters, including claims and compliance issues under the FLSA, FMLA, OSHA, Title VII, and the ADA. He regularly advises on workplace policies and procedures, employment and separation agreements, wage and hour compliance, employee classification, reasonable accommodations, and restrictive covenants.
Litigation is a core component of Mr. Pence’s practice. He handles complex matters from pre‑suit investigation through trial and appeal in both state and federal courts, in employment cases and broader business disputes. His experience spans numerous industries, including higher education, non-profit, healthcare, manufacturing, construction, retail, financial services, and hospitality.
Mr. Pence also serves as outside counsel to small businesses and nonprofit organizations, assisting with entity formation, governance, advising, and disputes. His related work includes advising professionals and organizations on privacy, regulatory, licensure, and professional responsibility matters.
Mr. Pence began his legal career at Thomas Mamer as a law clerk while attending the University of Illinois College of Law, and joined the firm as an associate after his admission to the Illinois Bar in 2016. After practicing employment law at a large international firm in Chicago, he returned to Champaign‑Urbana and became a partner in 2024.
Outside of his legal practice, Mr. Pence is a musician and drummer, performing with artists throughout Illinois and the Midwest.
